Year To Date: 13-11 (+0.29 units)

Well, we finally got back to having a positive week last Saturday, and not in the way I expected. Two underdogs winning outright, and a double digit favorite not only not covering, but losing altogether. I haven’t loved the board the last few weeks, so we will absolutely take it. This is hopefully the last time I say I don’t love the board, because next week’s schedule looks beautiful. Let’s get to work.

Oklahoma State -8.5 vs Iowa State -110

Drew Mestemaker continues to prove why he should be an early round draft pick

After faceplanting in Week One, Eric Morris has gotten back up and sprinted into a top position in the Big 12. The offense is clicking thanks in large part to potential first round draft pick Drew Mestemaker at quarterback and bellcow Caleb Hawkins in the backfield. I have full faith in the Cowboys to put up points against any defense, the question is if their defense can hold up and get enough stops. I think this is the perfect matchup for the defense to get right, Iowa State’s offensive unit has been a rollercoaster ride all year. They’re very banged up at the wide receiver position, and while running back Aiden Flora has been extremely impressive, defenses have been able to key in on the run game the last few weeks to limit his big plays (one game over 100 yards in last four games). Quarterback Jaylen Raynor still hasn’t shown the ability to consistently throw the ball, so if Oklahoma State can focus on stopping the ground game, there’s a chance we see a blowout.

Texas First Half -10.5 vs Mississippi State -120

Colin Simmons is a game wrecker. If he can suit up the Longhorns defense should dominate

By no means has Texas lived up to their preseason hype, and yet they still find themselves in the hunt for a playoff spot with several big wins on their resumé. They still have aspirations that Mississippi State don’t after their season has gone up in smoke. Their uber-talented quarterback Kamario Taylor is out for the season with a toe injury, and sophomore walk on Parker Puckett is taking over under center. Like one would assume, Puckett has looked totally overmatched in his snaps this season, and the offense has become extremely stagnant. Even the return of star running back Fluff Bothwell can only help the Bulldogs so much. The Longhorns defense, for all of their flaws, has elite talent. Potential top ten draft pick Colin Simmons is questionable for the game, but even if he can’t suit up his teammates should be able to take care of business. If they’re able to force Puckett into having to make plays themselves, we could see a laugher in Austin. I fully expect the Longhorns to want to push on the gas early, get a big lead and not worry past halftime.

Oregon State Team Total Over 31.5 -105

Jesse Legree committed to the Beavers for another year, can he make the rest of this season a special one?

How much more can I really say about this Oregon State Beavers team? They’re far and away my favorite watch this year in large part to the elite combo of Braden Atkinson and Jesse Legree. I’m hoping the team has extra motivation to put up a crazy number this week thanks to Legree announcing his decision to re-commit to the program next year. The vibes were already high in Corvallis, but now the team can continue to play fast and loose without the thought of losing their best player to the transfer portal in the offseason. Fresno State aren’t slouches, their defense is one of the better in the Pac-12 and they love to grind through methodical possessions to control clock. Not exactly what you want to hear when betting on their opponents offensive number. Luckily, Oregon State loves to get off to a quick start. if they can put a touchdown on the board quick it might force the Bulldogs to abandon their usual script and play faster in an attempt to keep up. I’ve backed the Beavers for a while now, and I don’t plan on stopping any time soon.

“A friend of mine who used to be my boss at ESPN once was asked why sports had exploded the way it had. He said, “Because you can’t go to Blockbuster and rent tonight’s game.” Every night is different in sports. Every day there are different heroes and villains and conversations after the game.“
