Welcome back to the Flushing Files. Full disclosure this one might be a doozy. The week for the Mets was not fun. Despite it being a .500 week the discourse around the team would lead you to believe they are dead last and they’ll never compete again. Let’s get straight to it.
The Good
Onto the Next: The beauty of baseball is that it’s a 162 game season. Last week, particularly the weekend is one we as Mets fans will want to forget. If you listen to the rotting corpse that is WFAN they’ll lead you to believe that the sky is falling. But as one door closes another opportunity presents itself.

The Pitching Continues to be Strong: As disappointing as the offense was last week the pitching was largely very good. Particularly David Peterson who turned in 2 quality starts. Kodai Senga also pitched well against Pittsburgh.
The Bad

Power outage: In 6 ball games last week the Mets posted 13 runs. Yuck. The offense only hit 1 home run. The top 3 in the order all struggled. Lindor Soto and Alonso slumping at once was too much to overcome for the Mets. Especially when you face a damn good New York Yankees team.

The Soto Convo: 22 really really struggled in the Bronx. 1 hit in 10 ABs and he absolutely loafed it out of the box for his last at bat. Today is a huge day for people who want to push an agenda about Soto and the Mets. Anytime you get into debates about body language and whatever else people are talking about I just don’t have the patience for it.

The Defense: Holy cow the Mets defense was horrific. It’s not just Pete Alonso almost throwing a ball into the dugout and giving us all Lucas Duda PTSD. It’s not just Mark Vientos being borderline unplayable at 3rd. Francisco Lindor is now up to 7 errors this season? And they are being consistently punished for it. They have to get it together.
Francisco Alvarez: Hand up, I’m officially concerned about the development of Alvy. He didn’t have a single hit last week and he struck out 5 times. He simply can’t get to high fastballs at all. His slugging numbers have steadily dropped each season in the bigs. Maybe the hand still isn’t 100% but it is a conversation we have to have soon.
Highlight of the Week
Baty Delivers: Ultimately there wasn’t much to smile about last week. Brett Baty coming through with a big go ahead home run last Tuesday was a cool moment. More of that please.
The Mets face a tough week ahead. They ship up to Boston for 3 games at Fenway then come home to face the Dodgers for 3 games over Memorial Day Weekend. They’ll need to tighten up to get some much needed wins this week.
