You may not feel it on the thermometer yet, things are starting to change. Football season is over, basketball and hockey are taking center stage, and the spring is just around the corner. Of course, what comes with all of that, is Spring Training! America’s national pastime is ready to make its return to 30 cities around the country, and before we can do that, the players need to get up and running. We have ticket deals, injuries, and new signing in San Diego and Boston. Let’s get out of the box running!
First Base

Groundhog Day: Here we go again in Anaheim. Another season and another injury to Anthony Rendon, likely to keep him out for much of the year. The once promising third baseman’s career continues the downward spiral it’s been on since joining the Angels. While it’s hard to say it will matter out west with manager Ron Washington said newcomer Yoan Moncada would play third over Rendon, this waste of a contract just continues to plague this once proud franchise. But hey, at least they got Kenley Jansen!
Second Base

Giving ‘em Away: With the season upon us, fans are starting to plot out which games they’re going to. If you’re a White Sox fan, then good news, you can go to A LOT of games for a great price. The pale hose introduced their new “ballpark pass,” offering fans 27 games, including opening day, for $125 total. Great deal…to watch some not so great baseball.
Third Base

Pivetta Picks Padres: Hold the phone, the Padres have added a free agent. In truth it’s actually their third signing of the winter as Connor Joe and Jason Heyward were signed last week. While the two role players are nice to pick up, San Diego has been in desperate need of a more impactful pickup to help the club this season. That signing comes in the form of pitcher Nick Pivetta, who reportedly signed a 4-year $55 million deal to head to California. The Canadian righty isn’t always flashy, but he’s been a reliable option for the Red Sox the last few season in the rotation. He fits in well behind Michael King, Yu Darvish, and Dylan Cease…assuming Cease isn’t dealt.
Home Plate

Shipping Up to Boston: The last marquee free agent is off the board, as Alex Bregman has signed with the Red Sox! Bregman swaps the space city for Beantown, to join an already talented lineup that boasts Devers, Casas, Duran and more. The reported deal for three years at $120 million, comes with an opt out after each season for Bregman, so it’s essentially three one-year deals. It feels like the Sox will get the best out of Bregman, who will play second base and help influence a young and talent group with his winning pedigree. He should also help spice up the rivalry with the Yankees, as he is already hated in the Bronx. An all around good piece of business by the Red Sox here to effectively put a bow on free agency.
