The New York Mets were dying a slow painful death heading into the 9th inning in Milwaukee. Devin Williams coming into the game, the brewers are a great defensive team the Mets offense bar Francisco Lindor was DOA. But then the strangest thing happened. Before I get to that let’s go back before we go forward.
When I think about this Mets season my first thought goes back to April 4th. The Mets off to an 0-4 start playing a doubleheader against the Detroit Tigers. They would go on to lose that game and fall to 0-5 and Gary Cohen would later drop this now infamous line.
The turnaround took time. Matter of fact the first two months of the season were absolutely miserable. Then on May 31st the Mets call up Jose Iglesias, Candelita himself. Shortly thereafter the turnaround begins. Everything good about this season is symbolized by what Jose Iglesias has done this year.
Like so many other guys on this team Iglesias was a castaway, he even debated retirement when he was optioned to AAA by the Mets following spring training. Iglesias would go on to deliver an incredible season hitting .337 while playing steady defense. Not to mention dropping absolute bangers and performing live at Citi Field.
What about a guy like Mark Vientos? Optioned to AAA to start the season in favor of Brett Baty (I wish you could see my face as I typed that) Mark Vientos has been floated in trade talks but has stuck with the team. Now look, arguably out 2nd best offensive player down the stretch. Vientos has made himself into a fantastic offensive player.
And how about this pitching staff? When Kodai Senga went down people were running for the boats like it was The Titanic. Luis Severino was very good this season after running his course in the Bronx. David Peterson came through when called upon. Sean Manaea pitched like an ace. Tylor Megill came up big when needed. I could go on and on about this team because they earned this praise.
I’d be remise if I didn’t mention absolute superstar and future Hall of Famer, Francisco Lindor. 33 Home runs 91 RBIs while playing near flawless defense, MVP in my book.
That brings us to now. Down to their last 3 outs Francisco Lindor draws a walk, following a Mark Vientos strike out Brandon Nimmo finds a hole and hits a single. Runners on the corners and cometh the man cometh hour. Pete Alonso who was much maligned this season delivers the biggest hit in his career. An oppo 3 run home run. Following an insurance RBI by Starling Marte David Peterson comes in to close it out. He gives up a lead off base hit. Then Peterson strikes out the next batter with a high fastball. Then comes the speedy Bruce Turang. Peterson induces a soft liner to short where our guy Francisco Lindor is waiting to turn a double play.
Truthfully, I have no words left to sum up this Mets team. Every step of the way they have pulled themselves off the mat. I know what I can say though. BRING ON THE PHILLIES. LETS GO METS.
