Yesterday the Mets season finally came to a close as they were shutout in Miami, dropping 2 out of 3 to the Marlins. To tell the story of this season or more aptly how this season collapsed we have to go back to June 13th.
The Mets were 45-24, 21 games over .500. Citi Field was packed out like never before. The vibes were great. And then it started to go so wrong. From June 13th on the Mets went 38-55. That is a season long pace of roughly 96 LOSSES. That is inexcusable, it is down right putrid.
It starts with the pitching staff. In 162 games this season Mets starters had 38 Quality Starts. For those at home who are unsure what a quality start is I’ll explain. A quality start is a stat for starting pitchers if you go at least 6 innings and allow 3 earned runs or less than you have pitched a quality start. From July 1st on this staff only had 13 quality starts and 4 of them were thrown by Nolan McLean who didn’t get here until AUGUST.
That is an indictment on the job that David Stearns did in building this ball club. My stance on Stearns is this. Is the farm in great shape? So it seems. The Mets have a bunch of prospects primed to move up in the next year or 2. But the product on the field was horrible from June on.

In a presser today David Stearns talked about needing to improve run prevention among other things. While I agree with him the defense was a problem the staff was horrible.

The moves made in the bullpen, garbage. Gregory Soto? Bum. Ryan Helsley? Puke. Tyler Rogers? With the bases empty? Good. With runners on? BUM.

We’re not sparing the offense that’s for damn sure. I think this group needs a shake up. The lineup was top heavy all season. Mark Vientos made us all dream last season and postseason. I think we’ve all seen enough of him. His ability at the plate which massively regressed couldn’t mask his unplayable defense. Ronny Mauricio wasn’t ready. Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil who this team relies on were extremely inconsistent. Remember when Stearns traded for Cedric Mullins? All time awful deal. The Mets basically played with a black hole in the lineup the whole season because the center field position was that bad.
On a personal note I’m beyond angry and disgusted. But I wasn’t surprised. This team never had a moment. They never rallied. So when they went down yesterday the writing was on the wall.
No stat more aptly sums up this gutless group of cowards that called themselves then this. The 2025 New York Mets were 0-70 when trailing after 9 innings. No rallies, no comebacks, no fight.
On that note that’s me finished with the Subway Beat for the season. I’m sure my pal Nick got a good chuckle over in Italy when he saw that Mets score yesterday. Now we transition into hate watch mode. Good luck to the Boston Red Sox and whoever plays the Phillies.
