Welcome back to the Flushing Files. To no one’s surprise this Mets team shit the bed in Washington. Then proceeded to get your hopes back up in Atlanta by winning the first 2 games then spewing up all over themselves in the last game of the series.

Before we get to the usual business it was just announced the Mets will be promoting top pitching prospect Jonah Tong. And to that I say thank God. Nolan McLean has come up and been absolutely fantastic. Give the young guys a chance. The vets simply aren’t pulling their own weight.

Oh by the way the kid is pretty good.

The Good

Mark Vientos Wakes Up: Maybe, just maybe Mark Vientos can’t be bothered with non stretch run baseball because he’s crushing the baseball right now. He’s hitting a monstrous .357 in the last week with 4 bombs and 9 RBIs. The strike out numbers are down as well. It’s all coming together at the right time for Mark.

Nolan McLean Rules: I love Nolan McLean. The Mets pitching development did it again it seems. Now if the position player development can catch up we’ll really be in business. Back to Nolan. McLean went 7 innings strong (yes a mets pitcher went 7 innings, it’s legal) in Atlanta. I think most importantly he faced some adversity when Ronald Acuna hit a home run of him in the 4th inning. Then he came back in the 6th and punched him out. Great mentality from the young pitcher.

The Bad

Reed Garrett heads to the IL: Just bad bad timing to lose a good arm in the pen. While I’ve been frustrated with Reed Garrett at times this season he’s usually pretty reliable. It’s a big loss down the stretch run.

Wtf

Sunday: The loss on Sunday encapsulated everything frustrating about this Mets team. They had a 2 run lead and gave it away. The offense had opportunities but they couldn’t capitalize. Then in the 9th inning they cut it to a 1 run game and then still lose. 2 men on and can’t find the big hit, again. Remarkably the Mets dropped to 0-53 when trailing after 8 innings. Do you know how insane that is? That a team with this lineup hasn’t been able to engineer one late game comeback? It feels impossible but it’s not.

Labor Day weekend is upon us and we’re truly in the thick of a stretch run fight for our playoff lives. The Mets have given themselves very little room for error. They took the first game in Philly last night. They have 2 more games in the series before a 4 game set with the Miami Marlins. Win baby win.

Highlight of the Week

Take it away guys…

Oh….and this happened

The real highlight of this stretch is the sweep of the Phillies, which moves the Mets to 72-61, four games back of the Phillies, who haven’t won at Citi Field in ten tries. The vibes in the series were immaculate thanks to walk off heroics and another Nolan McLean clinic. Even better news is that the Mets moved five games clear of the Reds for the last wild card spot in the NL. They’ll look to keep it going this weekend against the Marlins at home.

“Our favorite teams bring people together, keep family members close, bond people from different generations. Some of the happiest moments of my life involve something that happened with one of my teams.”
