Welcome back to the Flushing Files. The Mets had a very solid week. They split a hard fought series in LA against the Dodgers then swept the Rockies in Colorado.
Before I do the usual spiel about the good, bad and highlight of the week I do want to say one thing. The vibes around this team sure do feel great at the moment. The team bottle flip’d and victory kicked its way through another week of the season.
I don’t want to tell people how to be a fan. If you’re not passionate then what’s the point. All I ask is can we please stop trying to read into body language? Michael Kay is using every trick in the book to try and draw some attention. Don’t give it to him.
The Good
The Offense Springs to Life: The Mets offense really came to life this week. The long ball which was hard to come by at points this season arrived in a big way. Ronny Mauricio was called up and contributed in a big way in Colorado. Lindor, broken pinky toe and all came through in the clutch. And well Pete Alonso went nuclear, more on that later. Big picture this team is 42-24 and we still haven’t seen the offense live up to its full potential. Hitting with runners in scoring position could still improve. Frightening thought for opponents.
Helloooo Mauricio: Ronny Mauricio made a strong first impression when called up to the Mets in 2023. The fan base was genuinely excited to see more of Ronny in 2024. Then a torn ACL in winter ball derailed his season. In the wake of Mark Vientos’ injury opportunity came calling for Mauricio. After a tough start in LA Ronny bullied the Rockies. Including one majestic bomb of a home run.

Canning Responds: After calling out Canning on last weeks edition of the Flushing Files, Griffin Canning responded in style. 6 innings of shutout ball against the Dodgers in Dodgers Stadium. Hopefully it’s a spring board for more great starts.
Rival Misery: One thing about me is I enjoy laughing at the pain of my rivals. All because it happened to me as a child. If you lived through the late 2000s LOLMets it doesn’t leave you. So when the Braves fall to 10 games under .500 I smile. When the Braves blow a 10-4 lead in the 9th you can’t wipe the smirk from my face. When the Phillies lose 9 out of 10 including being swept by the Pirates, well look above for my response. The Yanks losing 2 out of 3 to the Red Sox at home was the sprinkles on top. A very good weekend for Mets fans everywhere.
The Bad
I don’t know if you can really characterize this section as bad this week but I will pose the question. What if… Brett Baty makes a good throw home? What if Brandon Nimmo adjusts his body correctly to a fly ball? It does feel like the Mets have squandered a few opportunities in games this season. But there’s a glass half full, glass half empty approach. If you’re a glass half empty sky is falling fan you probably pulled your hair out cursing the fact that our corner infielders can’t execute a throw to the plate. If you’re a glass half full fan you probably are looking at it as hey we split on the road with the world champions and won the season series. The truth is somewhere in the middle. The Mets have to execute better in the field but hey it’s June baseball and it’s a lot of time to clean these details up.
Highlight of the Week
Pete Alonso Goes Nuclear: Pete Alonso spent the week destroying baseballs. His average is up to .301 and he’s at 17 home runs on the season. He passed David Wright for 2nd all time in franchise history for home runs. But to call this a hot week isn’t doing it justice. Pete is using every part of the field. The last 2 seasons Pete was very pull happy. This really hurt his batting average and prolonged slumps.
On a personal note I’m thrilled for the Polar Bear. A few years ago he was clearly the guy on this team. Then friends grew very frustrated with him the prior 2 seasons. A lot of fans didn’t want him back. Now he’s playing MVP caliber baseball and it’s great to see.
The Mets face the Nats at home for a 3 game set before heading to Tampa for the start of a road trip.
