Hello Mets fans, welcome back to another edition of the Flushing Files. If you read last week I asked for 5 wins out of 6. The Mets delivered 5 wins out of 6 against the White Sox and the Rockies. Let’s talk about the week that was.
The Good
The Home Form Continues: The Mets have been outstanding at Citi Field this season. I known I’ve written about it a few times already this season but heading into this home stand the Metsies were faltering. The Citi crowd got to see the Mets rattle off a 7-2 home stand. Long may it continue.
Francisco Lindor: Do I really have to say anything else about this guy anymore. Last 7 days he’s hit for a .360 average, a couple home runs and delivered a walk off sac fly. It’s a blessing to watch this guy day after day, night after night. One of the best Mets I’ve ever seen.
Jeff McNeil takes control: After a slow start marred by injury, Jeff McNeil has ceased control of the 2nd base role. He’s hitting .313 in the last week. I like seeing that from McNeil, he’s a guy who made his bones being a contact guy, but changed his swing to be more of a power guy. If Jeff can hit .280-.300 while getting on at a good clip I’m very happy with that.
The Bad

Canning and Megill falter: It was a tough end of May for Griffin Canning. He struggled against the Dodgers and the White Sox in consecutive starts. Tylor Megill posted an ERA of 5.96 this month and he lost his last 3 starts of the month giving up 4 earned in each. This will be interesting to follow as Paul Blackburn makes his return to the rotation. Sean Manaea is also progressing in his rehab.
The Mark Vientos Conundrum: Mark Vientos has been the worst defensive 3rd baseman in baseball this season. I think it’s reached a point he’s simply unplayable at the position. Meanwhile he still hasn’t found his footing at the plate. He hit a 3 run bomb against the White Sox on Wednesday that I was hoping would spark him to life. He followed it up by going 1-6 with 4 Ks in the Rockies series. Here’s the reality, Brett Baty has flat out earned the job at 3rd. He’s been very good in the field and the offense is steadily improving. That leaves Vientos to battle for at bats in the DH role and frankly his offense isn’t cutting it right now. I’m not throwing in the towel on Vientos, he was too good last season and last postseason to just give up on him. But he’s got a mountain to climb to reestablish himself as an everyday player in the Mets lineup.
Highlight of the Week
Hat Tip to Jared Young: The Prince George BC native has been at this for a long time. He was a 15th round pick of the Chicago Cubs in 2017. He’s had a few stints in the bigs but has largely kicked around the minors. He’s done a decent job at DH for the Mets. Even came through a home run against the White Sox. I’m not sure how long Young will stick with the big club but he’ll always have that homer at Citi Field and that’s why sports are great.
Next time up for the Mets is a brief west coast trip. No it’s not Groundhog Day, the Mets are playing 4 against the Dodgers then 3 against the Colorado Rockies.
