Welcome back to the Flushing Files! After a frustrating series in Boston that saw the Mets drop 2 out of 3 the Mets came home sweet home to beat the Dodgers in a critical early season series.

The Good

Edwin Diaz finds the Groove: The Mets bullpen has been a story all season long. But the difference between a good bullpen and greatness rests on the shoulders of 39. Diaz has delivered every little bit and more the last month or so. His outing Saturday was masterful. Struck out 3 of the 4 batters he faced an absolutely shut the game down.

The Baty Train Rolls On: Since Baty was recalled he has been nothing short of fantastic. He provided a huge insurance run Saturday night with a RBI double in the 8th. He’s beginning to force Carlos Mendoza’s hand. Baty has been largely sheltered from lefties but he’s hitting so well while playing steady defense at the hot corner. Vientos is drowning at 3rd defensively. Don’t be surprised if you see Baty get more reps and Vientos shifted to DH more often.

2 out of 3 from the Dodgers: No this isn’t some revenge angle I’m going for here. This is purely looking through the lens of this season. As I said before the series at Fenway was so frustrating. That coming on the heels of a disappointing series in the Bronx. The Mets had to stop the bleeding. It was a great response from the team.

The Bad

The Big 3 Struggle: Lindor, Alonso and Soto each respectively struggled last week. Between the 3 of them they went up to bat 69 times and had 6 hits and worse 19 strikeouts. With that said Alonso came through with a big home run Sunday night to give the Mets a 2-1 lead. Soto had the big RBI double on Saturday. Lindor had a home run in the final game at Fenway.

Highlight of the Week

David Peterson, Take A Bow: Following a gutting extra inning loss on Friday night that taxed the bullpen the Mets needed a hero on Saturday night. Cometh the man cometh the hour. David Peterson stepped up in a massive way on Saturday. 7.2 innings with 7 Ks and held a dynamic Dodgers team to 2 runs. He went off the mound to a great and well deserved standing ovation from the Citi Field crowd.

It’s all well and good to win 2 out of 3 from the Dodgers but as we all know the most important game is the next one. Opportunity calls for the Mets this week. A 6 game home stand against the White Sox and Rockies. I really want the Mets to take at least 5 of the 6 games. We’ll see how it plays out.

“Our favorite teams bring people together, keep family members close, bond people from different generations. Some of the happiest moments of my life involve something that happened with one of my teams.”
