Well that felt good! After all the bluster and hyperbole, the Yankees took care of business in the Subway Series, winning two out of three games. It’s their fourth series win in a row since we last spoke, since yours truly has been a bit busy with the Knicks. But I’m back on the beat, ready to breakdown what’s gone into their recent run of solid play. Let’s get after it!

The Good

Bellinger puts the Subway Series on ice

Bellinger Breakout: When I last wrote about the Yanks it felt like Cody Bellinger was starting to come to life at the plate. That mini hot streak has morphed into a sustain run of form at the plate, as over the last 15 games, Belli had four homers, 12 RBI’s and a .345 average, with a .415 on base % and is slugging .621. He’s finding gaps, corners and the seats and it’s a beautiful sight. Bellinger is now up to .258, with 7 homers and 28 RBI’s on the year, with his cold start seemingly in the rear view, this is the kind of offensive contribution Yankee fans expected in the winter when he was acquired.

The airbender is back!

Devin’s Doing Fine: In fact he’s doing a lot better than fine, as over Devin Williams hasn’t allowed a run in 7 of his last 8 appearances. It started with his dominant inning against the Padres we highlighted last time, and has really gained momentum from there. Williams looks to be locked in, having struck out 10 batters over his six innings of work, a dramatic improvement from his early struggles. With the Yankee bullpen getting healthy and deeper, Williams resurgence only makes them better!

The Bad

A tough sight to say the least

Losing Oswaldo: Last week’s road trip to Seattle saw the Yankees suffer an unfortunate injury to all around Swiss Army knife Oswaldo Cabrera. Cabrera fractured his ankle scoring an insurance run in Monday’s blowout win in Seattle, a tough moment for such a well liked player. He’s likely out for the rest of the year, which creates its own problems as is. Waldo is a good role player that can cover multiple positions, and he had been doing a fine job at third base. His loss only furthers the issues at third that the bombers are dealing with, and they will have to address it at the deadline. Get well soon Oswaldo!

The booth has just never worked for me

Maybe It’s a Good Idea: The “idea” I’m referring is MLB leaving their partnership with ESPN. After 35 years of partnership, MLB announced they would leave and seek a new TV partner, and based on this booth I can’t blame them. I wanna caveat this by saying I tend to enjoy David Cone on the YES Network telecast, but he and this booth have no chemistry. Eduardo Perez is a tough listen, and Karl Ravech has always felt miscast in the play by play role. We’re a long way from the GOATS everyone!

We won’t do better then Jon Miller and Joe Morgan

Highlight of the Week

Quite the highlight pack for Warren

Will’s Working Out: I wanted to take the opportunity here to shout out Will Warren, who very quietly has started to put it together on the mound. He was at times overpowering in his last two starts against the A’s and Mariners, picking up a win (and a no decision in the Yankee win in Seattle), and striking out 16 batters over 12.1 innings pitched and allowing just 3 runs on eight total hits. The bombers need someone to help fill the gaps in the rotation Gil is back, so these outings were key!

The Yankees are now 27-19 on the year, having gone 7-3 in their last 10 games, putting them five games ahead of the Red Sox in the AL East. Next up is a three game home set with the Rangers, before they head west and play the Rockies, Angels and Dodgers on a nine game west coast swing. The Yanks have a chance to stay hot here, with some mediocre teams at best ahead of them before the World Series rematch in LA, so let’s keep it rolling boys!

“Our favorite teams bring people together, keep family members close, bond people from different generations. Some of the happiest moments of my life involve something that happened with one of my teams.”
