How are we doing folks? The first month of the season is coming to a close so let’s use this edition of ATH to look back at first string of games in this summer long marathon. We’ll get to the standings in a moment, but we’ll go around the diamond with a set of stories covering the best and worst the game has to offer. Let’s get after it!

First Base

Have a night big man!

Four Times the Four Baggers for Geno: There are big nights and then there is Eugenio Suarez’s impressive showing last week against the Braves. The major league leader in homers with 10 put the team on his back and hit not one, not two, not three, but four bombs including the game tier in the ninth to help the D-Backs eventually knock off the visitors from Atlanta. This is the 19th four homer game in MLB history, and the first since JD Martinez, a Diamondback at the time, in 2017. Suarez has long been one of the league’s best power hitters for the last few years, and it looks like he is going to play a big part for this Arizona team with big expectations in 2025.

Second Base

Sorry Bud Black, the umpire can’t help you either

Rocky Mountain Low: Let’s stay in the NL West and transition from the thrill of victory to the agony of defeat…and defeat…after defeat. Last year the White Sox were so bad we thought they might set the sport back a century, but this year’s Rockies are looking to set it back a millennium. Colorado is 4-25 on the season…yes you read that right. They are the worst, or nearly the worst, statistical club in the majors, with numbers that make your head hurt. The Rockies have long been dormant but in the NL and it seems like this group isn’t about to change that trajectory. Perhaps what’s even more concerning is that this season’s iteration of the team actually has some solid players on it, like Ryan McMahon, Brenton Doyle, but I guess they aren’t kidding when they say “talent isn’t everything.” Especially when you’re a bunch of lollygaggers.

Third Base

Mariners fans are as fired up as closer Andres Munoz with the team’s hot play of late

Seattle Surge: Ahhh the Mariners, the kings of 56%. Expectations were decidedly mid for this team that is…well it’s mid on paper so that makes sense. They started the 2025 campaign below that level of expectation though as they played the first twelve games at a 4-8 clip. Who knows what was said in the wake of the nightmarish start, but they have turned it around in a big way. They have gone 15-4 in the last 19 games, pushing their record to 17-12, good enough for first in the AL West. There have been a few contributors to this reversal of fortune, the first of which is their typically strong starting rotation and bullpen, anchored by closer Andres Munoz who is 10 for 10 in save opportunities with a 0.00 ERA. Offensively they are led by star catcher Cal Raleigh, who is tied for the league lead in homers with ten and the unlikely veteran presence of Jorge Polanco who is hitting .389 with 9 homers and 25 RBI’s. This team started well last year and fell off, so let’s see if they can avoid that this time around.

Ya don’t see this very often

Run Ramos Run: I won’t even bother saying anything here, I’ll just let the sweet sounds of the Giants broadcast crew tell the story!

Insight into PCA’s game from the best analyst in the business

A Star in the Making: The baseball world has gotten to know Pete Crow Armstrong the over the last few years. Mostly for his athletic ability and highlight reel plays, but not for his overall game. But now 2025 is starting to become his year, as Chicago’s number four is becoming a cornerstone piece for the Northside club playing sparkling defense in center field and batting .284 with six homers and 21 RBI’s. He’s made some tweaks to his game and while they seem small on the surface, it’s helped to make him a better hitter as Mark DeRosa shows you above.

The Walkoff

Terry Francona has to like what he sees right now

Tito’s Got ‘Em Going: Don’t look now, but the Cincinnati Reds are heating up. They’re 16-14, just two games out of first in the Central, having gone 7-3 in their last ten games. As usual they’re led by Elly De La Cruz who is hitting .270 with five homers and 24 RBI’s, but he’s got some solid backup this year as well. Newcomer Gavin Lux has enjoyed his change of scenery hitting .352 with one homer and 14 RBI’s and he is accompanied by a mix of young players putting up some good numbers. The pitching staff has looked solid so far as well with Hunter Greene and Nick Lodolo pitching to ERAs in the twos and winter addition Brady Singer starting 4-0. Manager Terry Francona is working his magic through a month, and it stands to reason this team should only get better.

Standings Update

We’ll close with a look at the standings around the league. It may only be May, but it’s never too early to dream about October.

“Our favorite teams bring people together, keep family members close, bond people from different generations. Some of the happiest moments of my life involve something that happened with one of my teams.”
