Welcome back everybody, it was another good week for the Mets (despite what some might lead you to believe). After a series sweep of the Philadelphia Phillies, the Mets split a 4-game set against the Washington Nationals in our Nation’s Capital. Let’s talk about it.

The Good

Mr. Hustle

The Offense explodes: On Monday afternoon the Mets bats came to life for a 19-run effort against the Nats. The star of the show was Brandon Nimmo. 4-6 with 2 home runs and 9 RBIs is a big day by anyone standards. But Nimmo has to get going soon, hopefully this day brings him to life.

Cook Griffin

Griffin Canning, Pitching Lab Monster?: Griffin Canning had another solid week. In 2 starts Canning pitched 10 innings conceding 1 run and striking out 10. Big picture it’s expected that Sean Manaea will be back in June. The good news is as things stand there’s no rush back. The staff is holding up very well. In fact I’m just not sure who comes out of the rotation. Before the season I would have said Megill or Canning would be the obvious choice but those are our 2 leaders in ERA for the season. Champagne problems indeed.

Offensive reinforcements- This past weekend saw the return of Francisco Alvarez and Jeff McNeil. And both marked their returns by hitting a home run. I think there’s a huge role to be had for both guys on this team. I still think Alvarez has all star potential (only 23 years old) and Jeff McNeil can still come through with big at bats.

The Bad

Sad Stanek

Sunday: In a 162-game season there’s a handful of games that you get the tape and bury it in the backyard. Blowing a 6-run lead certainly falls in that category. As soon as they blew the opportunity in the top of the 9th you knew what was coming.

AJ Minter injury: In his press conference today Carlos Mendoza announced that Minter suffered a serious LAT injury. It is potentially a season ender. The Mets are light for left handed relievers so Danny Young will need to be on it. I miss Brooks Raley.

Highlight of the week

Sweeping the Phils: Beating the Philadelphia Phillies always feels great. Sweeping them at Citi Field? Priceless. The cherry on top? The Phillies post-game crew berating the Phils and declaring the Mets own the Phillies (not my words). Being a Mets fan means you automatically hate the Phils. Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins, Shane Victorino etc. that team gave me PTSD. So when the Mets are consistently beating the Phillies it feels tremendous.

This week the Mets will play 3 games at home against the Diamondbacks then 3 games in St. Louis against the Cardinals. Keep stacking wins as we head into May.

“Our favorite teams bring people together, keep family members close, bond people from different generations. Some of the happiest moments of my life involve something that happened with one of my teams.”
