Hello friends, it’s good to be back writing for you all! This will be my weekly contribution to The Subway Beat series on the site, to help Nick cover the New York baseball scene, I’ll be handling my beloved New York Metropolitans while he writes about his Yanks. I’ll highlight the highs the lows and other organizational happenings.
It was a solid first full week for the Mets. 2 series wins first in Miami then a sweep at home against Toronto. Let’s dive into the good first!
The Good
Hello Bullpen: The Mets bullpen is off to a great start. I specifically want to highlight a few of the guys. Huascar Brazoban in 7.1 innings has more strikeouts than hits and has yet to give up an earned run. Max Kranick in 7 innings has only given up 1 hit. 22 batters faced 21 retired no earned runs.
Roaring to Life: After a tumultuous off-season our guy the polar bear Pete Alonso is off to a great start. 3 home runs, 10 RBIs and more walks than strike outs. The key for Pete has been hitting to all parts of the park as seen below. When he’s not trying to pull everything he’s truly an elite hitter.
Also it flies under the radar but Pete might mess around and win a gold glove. His defense at first isn’t appreciated by all but this guy notices.
The Bad

Clock Ticking on Baty: guess we’ll start with Brett Baty. I’ve been a member of the Baty train. I wanted to believe. After today I’ve honestly seen enough. Legendary spring training ball player, but just can’t deliver against big league competition. Since his first call up in 2022 we’re still talking about the same issue with Brett. Too many non competitive at bats marked by his 8 strikeouts in 21 at bats to start this season. Still hitting too many ground balls. When Jeff McNeil comes back it’s clear that Luisangel Acuna is the guy to keep with the big club over Baty.
Off The Mark: Mark Vientos is off to a miserable start. It’s unfortunate for him after a great 2024 regular season and playoff run. Terrible at the plate, defense has been rough and making silly mistakes like not running out a grounder against Miami. With that said I’m not throwing in the towel on Mark but it’s essential we get him right.
Highlight of the week
For the highlight of the week we head down to the farm to talk about Matt Allan. A now 23 year old Allan was once a highly touted 18 year old pitching prospect in the Mets system. After the Covid shutdown and multiple elbow surgeries Allan has remarkably gone over 5 years without pitching in a live game. Today he was back on the bump and what a return it was. 2.2 innings 5 strike outs and no earned runs for the Port St. Lucie Mets. Hard to not root for a guy like that. Good on ya Matt.
