The Giants signed a veteran quarterback…again. This time it’s Russell Wilson, who comes to the Big Apple to join the frat in a crowded QB room. Last week we celebrated the signing of mediocre journeyman Jameis Winston. Now we will decry the arrival of the mediocre Russell Wilson. Why? Let me show you exhibit lame.
Wilson played in Pittsburgh last season, leading the Steelers to a 10-7 record and a Wild Card berth after replacing Justin Fields under center. Fields is now across the hall in the Jets locker room, and the Steelers look primed to sign Aaron Rodgers, completing the Rooney/Mara/Johnson family QB love triangle. Russell Wilson is the true definition of “fine” which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, for a team that couldn’t even get close to that form Daniel Jones. For a coaching staff desperate to save their jobs, they’re trying to fortify their chances at going 8-9…but hey, we all have to have goals in life.

The more interesting discussion to have about this signing is what does it mean for the Giants outlook at the third overall pick. Big Blue now has to decide if they’d like to add a third QB to the roster this offseason, as they will likely have the chance to draft Shedeur Sanders or Cam Ward. But signing two veterans feels like an indication that they aren’t fond of either quarterback and want to wait on finding their future signal caller. I can’t argue with that logic if they feel that strongly about it. The worst thing a front office can do is force a QB selection, as that typically handcuffs a front office even more than usual. I would much rather see them select Abdul Carter, Travis Hunter or Mason Graham with this pick than wedge Sanders or Ward in.

Regardless of what they do with that pick, the Giants are on a march to mediocrity, one set in motion by an owner with no sense of direction. Which has generated a roster with no clear direction either, as its architects assemble this Frankenstein’s monster. It’s likely this team improves and while that’s certainly better than the alternative, it’s hard to get excited about it. Here’s to better days and no more Groundhog Day.
