It’s mid March in the Big Apple. The weather is turning. The Knicks are gearing up for the playoffs. The Rangers and Islanders are attempting to play hockey. The Johnnies are in the round of 32 later today. Opening Day is Thursday for the Bombers and Metropolitans. But one QB has come along to steal the headlines. No it’s not Aaron Rodgers, though I can’t blame you for thinking that way. Ayahuasca is off the menu in Midtown…because today our fair city dines on W’s!!!

In this moment, an internet sensation was born

That’s right folks, the man, the myth, the enigma that is Jameis Winston is coming to New York, as the newest member of the Giants. Now you may ask yourself, “Nick, why are you writing about a journeyman QB joining a bad roster?” The answer my dear reader is in the details, details you will learn as you get to know the new signal caller in town, Jameis Winston is no mere QB, he is a three act Broadway show of his own. Shakespeare would love his mix of comedic timing and tragic foley.

Desmond Howard who?!

In all seriousness, Winston isn’t a complete nobody. He won the Heisman Trophy in 2013 as he led Florida State to the National Championship. He was drafted first overall by Tampa Bay and has played parts of nine seasons with the Bucs, Saints and Browns. There is no denying that he has talent, but it’s truly always been feast or famine with him. For example, in 2019 Winston threw 33 touchdown passes and led the league in passing yards…and interceptions with 30, and threw a single season NFL record of 7 pick six’s. Truly a man of contradictions under center. This 2019 campaign later led to Winston getting LASIK surgery to correct his vision…I wish I was kidding.

Can’t argue with preparation

Since leaving Tampa, Winston has proven to be a solid backup QB, able to come in and win games when called upon…assuming he avoids the big mistake. The challenge before Brian Daboll is to coach the mistakes out Jameis, as it’s safe to assume right now he’ll get the first crack at starting. And if Daboll should fail to pull it off, don’t worry, Jameis has an audience with the almighty.

Last years Giants could have used some prayers

To answer another question of yours, no, this is not an act. Winston is if not anything else, the genuine article. He will come here and be his usual eccentric and fun loving self. Frankly, it feels like we could all use some of that right now in this world. It’s a dark place so some levity can’t possibly hurt. So let’s turn Jameis loose in town. Get him court-side with Spike, throwing out the first pitch at Yankee Stadium (he also played baseball at FSU), dancing the keyboards at FAO Schwartz, and driving a horse and carriage through Central Park.

If not anything else he’s going to make losing football games a hell of a lot more entertaining than Daniel Jones ever did. I’ll be rooting for him to make it work here and curious to see which young QB from the draft will be his understudy. Now go back and enjoy your Saturday folks…oh and one more thing, don’t worry Jameis, it snows in the tri-state!!
