I told you Bruce Springsteen has a song for every situation, and Wreck on the Highway certainly feels accurate this week. Not just on any highway, but on route three in East Rutherford, in the Swamps of Jersey. The Jets and Giants entered the week looking to build off of a pair of wins, and to say they didn’t come close would be an understatement. Don’t let the close scores fool you, it was the same old crap that we see befall these teams every time they lose. They are both unserious teams because their flaws never change and they don’t seem to know it. Let’s dive into both.
Giants

The Giants dropped Thursday nights contest with the Cowboys 20-15, as once again their offense was incapable of getting it done. In a game where they kicked five field goals, the coach had the nerve to talk about “the good things” this team did. It’s an utterly absurd stance to take in a game where your opponent was ripe to be beaten and gave you multiple chances to do so, yet you couldn’t take advantage. Daniel Jones was poor, the defense was fine, but not great and they couldn’t run the ball at all, against a dreadful Dallas defense. But don’t worry they did “good things” and “competed well.”

I have long thought Brian Daboll was the right man for this job but right now it doesn’t feel like he’ll survive much longer. In three short years he has gone from getting a lot of a little to getting almost nothing out of a lot more talent. We understand that Daniel Jones is brutal under center, the Giants made that abundantly clear on Hard Knocks this summer. We understand that his play handcuffs the passing game and their ability to be explosive. But that doesn’t explain away their inability to win up front, especially given their investment on both lines this year.

At 1-3 and already 0-2 inside the NFC East, this season is headed towards the same irrelevant finish we have seen from the Giants for years. It’s hard to see how they’ll win any of the next three games when they had west to play Seattle and then host the Bengals and Eagles (who admittedly are a mess). While you don’t get anywhere changing coaches every three years, John Mara and company have little recourse left this year, barring what feels like a miracle. It feels like it is once again time to clean house. The good news is, they’re not alone.
Jets

If you think Daboll and company look lost, they have nothing on the continuing clown car in charge of Gang Green. The Jets, off the back of two important wins, had the chance to get to 3-1 against the lowly Broncos and found a way to blow it, falling 10-9 at home. The irony is that all those two wins did was cover up things that were noticeable if you watched closely. I have told you this team is horribly coached and woefully underprepared for a game as a result of it. We’ll get to the culprits on that front in a second, but let’s highlight some of the player issues. The offensive line, much like the defensive line got bullied up front Sunday, which has at times happened to both units early this year. They couldn’t open a run lane and the Broncos were all over Rodgers as a result.

Even if they could open a run lane, could Breece Hall find it? And if he did, would he run through it with any authority right now? It doesn’t feel like the answer to either question is yes right now. Hall isn’t showing any real burst so far this year and his running in short yardage is awful. He’s not getting low and driving or taking on a tackler. Hall’s inability to execute in short yardage was really the difference today as one of the Jets three field goals was the result of him being stuffed at the goal line twice. Until Hall figures it out, it’s time for Braelon Allen to take those short yardage looks (and maybe others)…if the coaching staff can figure that out of course.

That coaching staff had yet another ugly game where the preparation was dreadful and the play calling was worse. The Jets started flat as usual, took 13 penalties (nothing new) and didn’t adjust at all. Rob Saleh and Nate Hackett in particular can’t ever seem to get out of their own way and this mess is on him. Don’t blame the weather, don’t say “they had a shot at the field goal late.” This game should never have come down to that at all. It’s a miserable performance from every coach and every player involved and they had better pull it together quickly. The Jets are off to London this week, where they will battle the 4-0 Vikings and former signal caller Sam Darnold. This game will be an absolute handful as Minnesota looks more and more legit this year and after the tilt with the Vikes, Buffalo comes to MetLife. Time to respond or really start to worry about this team.
