Year to Date: 2-1 (+1.1 units)

After an awesome slate of games during Week 1, we have a bit of a lull in the schedule heading into Week 2. Luckily for us, it doesn’t matter how good the games are if you’re making money! One of my favorite things about gambling on college football is finding the smaller programs that sometimes slip through the cracks and don’t get the love they deserve. These programs a lot of the times get lines that simply don’t make much sense, especially early in the season, that’s when we have to take advantage. So without further ado, here are my picks for Week 2.

“Mini-Mahomes” Dylan Raiola gets a chance to show off this Saturday night

Nebraska -6.5 vs Colorado

It feels weird to say but, Nebraska might actually be… *gulp* back? A resounding win in Week 1 over a team that many liked going into the season in UTEP has Cornhusker fans thinking about just how far this team can ride this wave of momentum. Freshman quarterback Dylan Raiola looked like the real deal, and while it may be too early to grace him with the nickname “Baby Mahomes”, he made all the plays that an elite quarterback makes at a very young age. Nebraska rotated a cast of three running backs in Emmett Johnson, Dante Dowdell and Rahmir Johnson to great success, and if they can continue to ground and pound against a soft Colorado defense they might not even need Raiola to play hero ball. We know Colorado is going to put up points, but we haven’t seen anything out of their defensive unit over the last year to prove that they can make key stops. Nebraska is once again going to have a solid defensive unit, so if they can slow down Shadeur Sanders and Travis Hunter even just a tiny bit, they have a chance to cruise.

Ty is deep in his bag with Sam Houston State this week

Sam Houston State +21.5 vs UCF

It’s still early, but I might have found my non-Power 5 darling that I will consistently put my money behind this year. Sam Houston State, in just their second year as an FBS team, have become one of the more fun teams to watch in the sport. Now don’t get me wrong, they won’t be beating the likes of Georgia or Ohio State any time soon, but they have the talent to push some lesser teams to the limit. The Bearkats looked like they would be going with Jase Bauer at quarterback to start the season, but they pulled a fast one on Rice in Week 1, going with Hunter Watson as the signal caller instead. Watson took the opportunity and ran with it, throwing for two touchdowns and proving he can take off and make plays with his legs, running for another 57 yards. UCF’s defensive line has proven to have their flaws, and Sam Houston loves to punch you in the face with smash mouth football before throwing deep, this could be a tough matchup for the Knights. KJ Jefferson looked rusty out there in his first start for UCF after transferring from Arkansas, and he didn’t exactly look to be in true game shape either, just another thing to look out for. And as they say, numbers never lie. Under Gus Malzahn UCF is just 3-6 against the spread as double digit home favorites against FBS teams. UCF might still win by multiple scores, but I feel comfortable taking the Bearkats with the points. #EatEmUpKats

Jeff Taylor’s Roadrunners are always a fun watch

Texas State vs UTSA over 58.5 points

Another team getting love from a lot of professionals are the Texas State Bobcats, a team that can put up points seemingly at will. It took many by surprise that one of the top quarterback recruits in the nation decided to take his talents to San Marcos, but Jordan McCloud bucked the trend and joined the upstart program after leaving James Madison. McCloud has seemingly already developed a connection with receiver Joey Hobert, who went for 6-91-2 in the opening week. If the passing game can catch up to an elite running game led by Ismail Mahdi, the Bobcats could be cooking with gas. On the other side don’t overlook a UTSA team who loves to sling the ball all over the field. Owen McCown, son of Josh McCown (god, we’re old) has shown that he’s not afraid to let it fly, attempting 38 passes against a Kennesaw State team that they probably should have beaten by a lot more. Look for UTSA to play with a chip on their shoulder after a disappointing opening week and try to put up a crooked number.

“Our favorite teams bring people together, keep family members close, bond people from different generations. Some of the happiest moments of my life involve something that happened with one of my teams.”
