It’s time for a Sunday edition of Four Downs! We have two big pieces of news to get to as well as two stories on the lighter side as the preseason comes to a close. Let’s get after it!
First Down
Where’s MJ?: This was actually a story I meant to include two weeks ago but some big trades took its place. Training camp always brings some fun, especially on HBO’s Hard Knocks, who this season features one of the most talked about teams, the Chicago Bears. The show is always really good to watch but this one in particular has been enjoyable with Chicago breaking in QB Caleb Williams and a talented cast of new faces. The HBO folks got into the Chicago mood early with an awesome recreation of the 90’s Bulls iconic entrance. Hopefully Michael Jordan and company approve.
Second Down

JD in DC: The first news item of the week comes from the rookie QB ranks, as the Commanders announced that top pick Jayden Daniels will be the week one starter. Daniels has had a decent preseason statistically, going 12 of 15 for 123 yards, while rushing for 16 yards on three carries and one score in two games. I’m a bit surprised he is getting the immediate start, but he is very mature after years of college ball, so what does Washington have to lose?
Third Down

The Man in Mile High: Our third down has a lot in common with our second, as the Broncos named their first round pick, and former experienced college QB Box Nix the week one starter. Unlike Daniels, Nix has put up some really exciting numbers in the preseason. Number ten has gone 22 of 30, for 205 passing yards, 29 rushing yards, and two touchdowns passes. While it is only preseason, Nix looks comfortable under Sean Payton’s tutelage. Maybe after years of searching, the Broncos hunt for a savior under center is over.
Fourth Down

I Feel Old: Maybe it’s just because my birthday was Friday (I’m only 28 so ignore me). Maybe it’s because Derek Jeter, Andy Pettitte and Mariano Rivera were at Yankees Old Timers Day together. If it isn’t those, it’s definitely that Frank Gore Jr. son of one of the all time great backs, carried the rock for the Bills in the preseason finale Saturday. The undrafted rookie carried it 33 times for 163 yards and one rushing touchdown, while also catching four passes for 16 yards, across three games. Maybe the Bills have a diamond in the rough here.
