Welcome to the inaugural edition of Four Downs, our new series that will drop weekly throughout the season. This series, similar to Around the Horn and Around the Rink will bring you the best from around the NFL. I’ll be joined in writing this series by some of my fellow contributors here at the site, friend of the blog Sean Martin in particular, who will soon be joining us. With training camp up and running now feels like a good time to get started, let’s take the snap and work on moving the chains.
First Down

Aiyuk on the Move?: As training camp gets going the trade winds are blowing out west. This time it’s Niners wideout Brandon Aiyuk who seems to be trending towards swapping uniforms, as he’s at a contract impasse with SF. For the moment he’s rumored to be headed for the Steelers or Patriots, but that is changing by the minute. As intriguing as his impact on a new squad would be, I’m equally interested to see what the Niners get back for him, especially if it’s a piece that impacts the team now.
Second Down
Big Trouble in Big D: It’s never dull in Dallas is it? The Cowboys have entered camp looking to meet their typically lofty expectations, but they typically can’t seem to get out of their own way. Jerry Jones and the front office are locked in contract disputes with Dak Prescott, Ceedee Lamb and Micah Parsons…so basically their whole team. Jerry had some choice words for his negotiations with Lamb, who responded in kind on Twitter Thursday night. The Cowboys need to slow down the drama, before the actual on field drama begins.
Third Down
Rhyme Time: There are players in sports that make for a great sound bite, and then there is Jameis Winston. Winston has a new home this season, as he serves as backup to Browns starter Deshaun Watson. Winston, as he usually does, used colorful terminology to praise his fellow signal caller who is under fire in Cleveland after the team enjoyed success without him last season. Hopefully for Watson’s sake, Jameis is right, otherwise Winston may be under center for the Brownies.
Fourth Down
Sign that kid up!: It’s time to go for it on our final down, and this one takes us to Green Bay, where the Packers played their yearly preseason family night practice. This exhibition tops all others though, as it’s played at Lambeau field in front of the Packer faithful. As part of the festivities, the Pack brought some lucky young fans in the field to participate in drills and one of them made a memory that will last a lifetime. Young Trace Ramirez caught not one, not two, but three punts in a row and was mobbed by his heroes! This moment really speaks to the bond the Packers have with their small yet passionate local community of fans. They are truly unique in the league and really pro sports as a whole, being one of the most successful teams in history, playing in a small midwestern town. Maybe Trace Ramirez will be on the receiving end of a Jordan Love pass years from now.
