Welcome to another edition of Around the Horn. We’re dropping on Tuesday this week as the production schedule is a bit in flux this time of year here at The Breakdown. This week we have a mix of stories ranging from the hilarious in the booth, to uniform drama, to some ugly play in San Diego and rare joy on the Southside. So, ignore your mid-week blues and agonizing commute (unless you’re driving) and let’s get after it!

First Base

How can you not be romantic about baseball?

Benny Baseball Walks It Off: Our first item this week comes from the Southside of Chicago, where for a change there was actual joy amongst the White Sox faithful. They have endured a miserable start to their season but this past weekend against the Rays, the “pale hose” said, enough is enough. After taking the opener Friday night, the Sox came back to walk it off Saturday night in front of a big crowd at Guaranteed Rate Field. Andrew Benintendi’s game winning homer set off a wild celebration that was followed up by a win on Sunday to sweep the series. It’s a small token of success for a team that already has 20 losses on the season, but it almost felt in that moment that all of the White Sox problems faded into the background.

Second Base

The vibes aren’t great in sunny San Diego

Unholy Friars: That’s certainly how it feels in San Diego right now as the Padres are sliding to the finish in April. The Friars sit at 14-17 overall, having gone 3-7 in their last ten games, and are a wretched 6-11 at beautiful Petco Park. This start is particularly frustrating given how much talent is still on this roster and how disappointing last season was. The good news for them is that no one has pulled away in the NL West and it is still early enough that they can put things together. If they don’t get it going before the deadline, perhaps we will see further changes to this roster.

Third Base

Let’s just say the uniforms don’t hold up well in the heat

Wardrobe Changes: In the words of the great Morris Buttermaker, “hey Whitewood, what’s this crap about uniforms?” That’s probably what’s been going through Rob Manfred’s head as his has office has been dealing with a torrent of complaints from the fans, media and players alike about the uniform situation. To alleviate his headache, the commissioner’s office announced that the necessary changes will be coming to the players gameday fashion. These changes will remedy issues regarding players sweating (yikes), the size of the lettering, and the mismatched gray tops for road games. The adjustments should all be completed by the end of 2025, which isn’t great, but hey…we can’t have it all can we?

Home Plate

An all timer from the Phillies booth

Take it Away Kruker: Our final story this week is one that actually requires me to stop rambling on. Instead of explaining it to you, I will let the great John Kruk do the talking for me! All I’ll say is, this story is truly worth your time…enjoy!

“Our favorite teams bring people together, keep family members close, bond people from different generations. Some of the happiest moments of my life involve something that happened with one of my teams.”
