I’m coming to you live from my morning commute on NJ Transit after one of the wildest games I think we’ve all ever seen. There are finishes and then there is that. The Knicks, seemingly dead on their feet, managed to steal game two late from the 76ers in the most insane fashion possible. Let’s take a moment to appreciate “Divo’s” game winner one more time.
If you root for the Knicks, even just on a casual basis like I admittedly do at times, your commute was a bit easier today. This city has waited a LONG time for a moment like that to come back to The Worlds Most Famous Arena. It was a scene out of the old days. Instead of Charlie Ward and Larry Johnson stunning the Pacers, it was Isaiah and the Nova trio finding a way to beat Philly.
The shot in question by DiVincenzo was certainly aided by a confluence of events, as the Knicks should probably never have gotten a look at the rim with a chance to tie or win. The Orange and Blue played poorly all night to be honest. Sloppy passes, poor execution on the break, and Jalen Brunson’s struggles seemingly had the game lost. But it started with a Kyle Lowry missed free throw. Instead of going up six, Philly went to work on defense up just five. From there it took a lucky Brunson three, a blatantly missed foul on Maxey and an unreal rebound by Isaiah Hartenstein to set up “The Big Ragu.”
This series feels like it is far from over. The 76ers have battled brilliantly in each of the first two games, and are arguably a few plays away from being up two games themselves. But execution in the final minutes of both games has been the difference so far. The Knicks go to Philly with real issues to solve. They have yet to find a defensive answer for Tyrese Maxey and Jalen Brunson can’t seem to get it going on offense. For a team with no clear secondary scorer, their primary option can’t shoot 30% from the floor across two games. But those problems are a lot better to try and solve up 2-0 in the series.
