Its Monday morning so I thought we should take a chance to celebrate the best moments from an exciting New York sports weekend. This was one of the most anticipated in sometime and it’s safe to say it lived up to the hype. Let’s look back on the weekend that was to keep the good vibes rolling into the week ahead.
Juan Blows the Roof Off the Bronx
We begin with the Yankees and Juan Soto, who hit a majestic home run to blow open the Bombers Friday night clash with the Rays. To that point in the game the Yankee bats had been quiet, but the offense came to life in the seventh and then number 22 capped the rally. The Yanks went on to win the series against the division rival Rays and improved to 15-8 on the season with the lowly Oakland A’s coming to town for four very winnable games.
Mets
Next, we turn our attention to the Mets, who went west and continued their winning ways by taking two of three from the “vaunted” Dodgers. The biggest hit of the weekend was Francisco Lindor’s home run to break a seventh inning tie. Lindor has had a slow start to the season but is starting to come around and big hits like this will go a long way towards getting him going. The series win moved the Mets to 12-9 and they’ll stay out west to battle the Giants this week to conclude the road trip.
Islanders
While their trip to Raleigh wasn’t successful, we still need to include a big moment for an Islanders youngster who got the team on the board in the playoffs. Young Kyle MacLean stepped into the spotlight to tie the game at one with a goal out of a net mouth scramble. The goal was the first of his playoff career and it gave the Isles hope of pulling off a comeback win. Unfortunately, they fell short, but the Islanders acquitted themselves well in the game in my opinion. They played well enough to win and can certainly bounce back in game two.
Knicks
We transition to the hardwood, where the Knicks took on the Sixers Saturday night and took the series lead, in large part due to the heroics of Josh Hart. With the game close late, the Sixers dared number three to hit from beyond the arc…challenge accepted. Hart hit not one, not two, but three straight clutch threes and grabbed a critical offensive rebound to help ice the game. Game one was a back-and-forth affair that featured plenty of exciting moments, something that should continue in game two Monday night at the Garden.
Rangers
Our final moment of the weekend comes from the ice, as the Rangers took game one from the Capitals thanks to the contributions of their fourth line, and in particular Matt Rempe. Number 73 got the chance to make his playoff debut Sunday afternoon at The Worlds Most Famous Arena and he wasted no time making his impact felt, playing his usual physical game and eventually scoring the opening goal of the game. The goal blew the roof off the Garden and the Rangers never looked back from there as they took the game 4-1. Rempe should be back in the lineup Tuesday night for game two as the Rangers look to take command at home.
It’s important to keep this weekend in perspective. The Knicks and Rangers have only won one game so far, and its only April for the Mets and Yankees. But this city yearns for weekends like this every year and we New York fans deserve them. Let’s keep on believing in our teams and keep the good vibes going.
