As we kick off a new week it’s time to talk about the Cleveland Guardians. After a forgettable season by the lake, the Guardians saw a significant change come to the franchise this offseason. Future Hall of Fame manager Terry Francona retired and has been replaced in the dugout by long time major leaguer Stephen Vogt. Vogt’s rookie season at the helm will be a pivotal one for the club as they transition on the field. They made no notable moves this winter and will be leaning on some young guys to make an impact. While it’s easy to expect them to repeat last year’s disappointment, let’s take a look at how they can compete in a soft AL Central.

Keys to Success

The heartbeat of the Guardians, Jose Ramirez

1. Jose Shoulders the Load: It’s no secret that the Guardians go as Jose Ramirez goes. The switch hitting third baseman remains one of the finest players in the game and is likely to maintain that level of brilliance again this season. While you can count of Ramirez to do his part, the question remains, does he have enough help?

Cleveland’s close Emmanuel Clase needs to have another big season

2. Bullpen Keeps it on Lock: Aside from Jose Ramirez, the most consistent thing about the Guardians is their talented bullpen. Emmanuel Clase, James Karinchak, and Sam Hentges headline a talented group that will need to eat innings. If they can avoid ugly losses late in games, it will go a long way towards surprising this year.

Can young catcher Bo Naylor take a step forward this year?

3. Youthful Energy: The Guardians will be rolling out several fresh young faces this season but three are expected to make the roster early this season. Bo Naylor, Brayan Rocchio, and Kyle Manzardo should all appear at some point this season and Cleveland will need them to hit the ground running in The Show. If they do the team can succeed this year and in the future.

The Prediction

Can rookie skipper Stephen Vogt lead this team to the playoffs?

70 Wins

I can’t see a world where this team truly competes this season. The Guardians have some nice pieces that could keep them relevant, but those pieces are more likely to net them good assets at the deadline than a playoff spot.
