Typically, this segment comes at the end of our Nights on Broadway recap but we’re prepping a specialty release on that front right now, so this week Around the Rink will stand alone. Let’s get to the latest headlines that are capturing attention around the league. With the All-Star Break around the corner some teams are rolling while others will welcome the breather that the week off provides to get away from their struggles. Let’s break it down!

New Islanders coach Patrick Roy

Roy’s Got a New Job, Got a New Office: I can’t speak for his life or his wife, but hopefully the families fine. The Islanders aren’t fine though, as they have lost four in a row and fired head coach Lane Lambert. All-time great goaltender and former Colorado Avalanche head coach Patrick Roy has been named the new bench boss by President and GM Lou Lamoriello. The Isles have been an inconsistent team all year whose over .500 record is aided by eleven extra points from overtime and the shootout. Roy comes in after a successful stint coaching in the junior ranks for the Quebec Ramparts and has reportedly improved greatly as a coach. His tenure in Colorado saw some high high’s, low lows and his fiery temper on full display 24/7. It will be interesting to see how he fits with Lou and a team in desperate need of a jolt. The good news for him is he got off to a winning start Sunday night thanks to Bo Horvat’s OT goal. As for Lane Lambert, he’ll be free to seek employment somewhere on the Long Island Italian restaurant scene.

The Flyers celebrating a goal against the Stars

Yo Adrian We’re Doin It: The Flyers seem like they’re just getting warmed up in the middle rounds. This motley lineup plays the part of Rocky, while grizzled head coach John Tortorella plays the part of Mickey. This past week they made the Jets and the Stars, two of the top teams from out west, look like Spider Rico as they beat both sides in impressive fashion. The Flyers look like they are destined to be in this race for the long haul as they have moved to within two points of the metro leading Rangers. The question is, will the front office do their best impression of Adrian and hold the team back from winning with their deadline moves?

The Oilers celebrating a goal

Come On Everyone We’re Going Streaking: through the quad, and then to the gymnasium, and then to the Stanley Cup! At least that’s how it feels in Edmonton right now. The Oilers are riding a 13-game winning streak and have turned their season around under head coach Kris Knoblauch. The Oilers are 22-6-0 under the first-time head coach and have climbed to third place in the Pacific division. This turnaround has seen the team fire on all cylinders, as they are getting contributions from more than just the usual suspects of McDavid and Draisaitl. Goaltender Hunter Skinner has excelled in net as well, giving the Oilers renewed hope that he can solve their long running issues in the pipes. This has become one of the league’s best stories as Edmonton has saved a season that seemed to be lost.

Shel On the Hot Seat: Sheldon Keefe may well be in trouble as the Leafs continue to struggle. They currently sit fourth in the Atlantic Division with a record 22-14-8, in the heat of the playoff race with the surging Lightning. Blown leads have been the hallmark of the season, highlighted by last week’s consecutive meltdowns against the Islanders and Avalanche. Their inability to defend is best exemplified by their poultry total of 15 regulation wins, a number that puts them in the illustrious company of teams like Minnesota and Ottawa. They still don’t seem to value solid depth as they once again elected to pay one of their core stars, William Nylander, which will hurt their cap flexibility going forward. While Keefe is not solely responsible for all these issues, it feels like he could be gone soon if he can’t shake the team out of this funk soon.

Winning The Trade: This past summer the Flames and Devils hooked up on a trade that sent veteran sniper Tyler Toffoli to New Jersey in exchange for young forward Yegor Sharangovich. Toffoli was one of the offseason’s most sought after trade chips and for the most part has delivered on his promise for the Devils, with 17 goals and 30 points on the season. It was largely considered to be an open and shut case that the Flames would lose the deal with Sharangovich having looked like a shell of himself last year. Fortunately for Calgary the 25-year-old has regained his form from the 21-22 season with 19 goals and 32 points so far on the year, helping the Flames surpisingly hang around the playoff picture. This may be a deal to watch for years to come as Calgary’s rebuild takes shape around the youngster.

Less Effective Than the Government: Things just never seem to get better in the Canadian capital, as the Senators have continued to struggle since firing head coach DJ Smith. Owner Michael Andlauer was looking for this team to wake up under interim head coach Jaques Martin, but they have continued to underperform with a record of 5-9-1 under the veteran bench boss. So far Smith and GM Pierre Dorion have been fired due to this groups poor play, at some point you have to wonder when the players will answer for the underachieving. Andlauer seems short of patience so be on the lookout for some members of this team’s core to be on the move sooner rather than later. Defenseman Jacob Chychrun and winger Vladimir Tarasenko are reportedly on the block and generating lots of trade buzz.

We’ll have a special release coming soon as we hear from our fellow Rangers fans in a survey that we have been working on for several weeks now. We will also have more playoff football content ahead so keep an eye out for that as we conference championship week.
