I might as well copy and paste this recap each week. Nothing ever changes in this town. We’ll get through the locals in a hurry so we can talk about some real teams. The Giants played first so they can sit in the electric chair first.

Giants

Ceedee Lamb was off to the races

There really isn’t much to say here. The Giants turned in another pathetic effort against their arch rival. With Sunday’s loss, Big Blue lost both games this year to the Cowboys by a total score of 89-17. They gave up a staggering 640 yards while racking up a paltry 172 of their own.

This team continues to show no fight, and no their silly last minute touchdown drive doesn’t count. The offense was barely functional with Tommy DeVito under center while the defense didn’t stand up at all. It was baffling to see them celebrating touchdowns and interceptions down by 30 points. This teams culture is truly in a bad place, a far cry from a season ago.

If Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen survive this mess, and that’s becoming a big if, in my opinion they need to gut this roster. The veterans aren’t holding up their end of the bargain and that sets a negative tone for the whole group. They have to go about finding some better leaders to come in here and help repair this locker room.

For now all that’s left is tanking for the best draft pick they can get. Tommy DeVito isn’t going to win many games under center so tanking may be easy despite there being a lot of competition for the top pick in this years NFL Draft. If the Giants are lucky enough to pick in the top three, they will have the chance to draft a franchise changing talent. They need it badly, otherwise this mess will only get worse from here.

Jets

Close but no cigar once again for the Jets

I’m not even getting into Zach Wilson’s performance here. He was a bit better than usual but there isn’t anything more to say about him that I haven’t said already. This 16-12 loss to the Raiders says a lot more about the state of the Jets team than anything else. With eight more penalties, they found more ways to shoot themselves in the foot, a continuing trend that has cost Gang Green games.

This is flat out unacceptable for any team, let alone the Jets and their small margin for error
The height of embarrassment

The stats tell the story of a head coach who is incapable of properly preparing his team. Rob Saleh can tell everyone that this kind of play is “unacceptable” but the actions of this staff and the results they get speak for themselves. It goes much further than penalties, as this team continues to struggle to execute the basics. They still haven’t leaned that they should fall on fumbles or that one armed tackles won’t cut it.

While it’s been hard to knock the defense this year, Sunday night’s performance wasn’t good enough. Allowing a rookie QB to put together solid drives while giving up 148 yards rushing simply won’t cut it. They didn’t force enough negative plays despite holding the Raiders to several field goals. As good as they are, I just expect more from them in a must win game like this one.

This loss kills whatever playoff hope the Jets had left. After the Giants game we talked about how they had to parlay the gift wrapped “W” into a winning streak with victories over the Chargers and Raiders. These critical head to head games will play a part in the AFC playoff race, and at this point it’s hard to see the Jets as a part of it. Before we can even think about finding a way to make the playoffs, lets stop being out coached by a rookie head coach.

With things looking like they’re on the verge of spiraling out of control, the season will become about further evaluating everything. This coaching staff needs to prove they can do the job and the players on this team need to clean up their game. I would replace the whole coaching staff, no matter what, as their performance holds this team back. Sure Zach Wilson is a problem, but we need to stop pretending he is the “whole” problem. Next up are two games in division, at Buffalo and then home versus the Dolphins on “Black Friday.”

Around the League

Josh Dobbs rocking his new Vikings threads

It’s Not Rocket Science: Its in fact quite easy for Josh Dobbs, who holds an aerospace engineering degree. Dobbs has seamlessly fit in with the Vikings following his trade deadline arrival. The Vikes are 2-0 with Dobbs under center and are squarely in the playoff race at 6-4. Perhaps the magical Dobbs story could have a fairy tale ending.

The Steelers celebrating their win over the Packers

Doing It The Hard Way: There is winning ugly and then there is the Steelers. Pittsburgh has been out-gained and out-scored for much of the year. Kenny Pickett and the offense are anything but impressive, yet they seem to come up clutch when it counts. They are backed up by a brilliant defense, which remains stout week in and week out. At 6-3 this is quickly becoming the unfairly maligned Mike Tomlin’s best coaching job.

Might be time to buy in

Blue Horseshoe Loves the Texans and Browns: Or at least I think Gordon Geco from Oliver Stone’s film Wall Street would love them. The Browns did an incredible job on the road pulling out a big win over the rival Ravens, led by probably Deshaun Watson’s best game for them. Meanwhile the Texans led by electric rookie CJ Stroud went into Cincy and knocked off the Bengals. Keep an eye on these two down the stretch as they are gaining ground in their respective divisions.

Falcons head coach Arthur Smith

The Artie Party is Over: The Falcons had the worst loss of the weekend as they fell to the Cardinals 25-22 in Kyler Murray’s return. Now sitting at 4-6, Atlanta has made a mess of a once promising season. Head coach Arthur Smith is rightfully under fire for how he has handled the QB situation and his inability to game plan his best weapons into the game. There may be a pink slip in Smith’s future.

Amon Ra St. Brown heading for the end zone

Game of the Year: At least so far it was. In a weekend full of exciting contests, the Lions thrilling 41-38 win over the Chargers stood out above the rest. This game was a heavy weight fight with both offenses going back and forth. Jared Goff and Justin Herbert both played brilliantly and the coaches took some exciting chances. Dan Campbell’s 4th down roll of the dice helped seal a signature win for Detroit as they hit 7-2 on the year.
